Suyo Long Cucumber
This very traditional ribbed variety from China grows 10-18"-long on productive 5' vines that should be trellised, if you prefer straighter fruit. Thin skin and sweet flesh make this a great variety for fresh eating. Heat-tolerant, disease-resistant, and reported to be burpless.

Cucumbers are most often used raw and are perfect in salads. Some chefs prefer to peel the skin off the fruit as it can be bitter.
Cucumbers pair well with mint an dill, which can be added directly to your salad or to dressings. Cucumber and mint can also be added to smoothies and juice. Tatziki sauce is made from shredded cucumber, yogurt, and dill.
Pickling cucumbers, however, are best for preserving in a solution of vinegar, salt, sugar, spices, and water. You can create countless number of combinations for your pickles to use on sandwiches, as a relish, or eaten as side dish.
Instructions - When growing plants on a trellis, space seed 6-8" apart and thin plants as necessary; train plants to climb the trellis with an initial guidance. Alternatively, make 12" hills at least 6' apart. Plant 6-8 cucumber seeds per hill 1" deep. After germination, thin to 3-4 plants per hill. Can also be started indoors 2-4 weeks before last frost. Cucumbers benefit from steady moisture.

If I had to pick one cucumber this would be it
If I could recommend one cucumber this would be it. Tried this on a whim to try a new variety and it did not disappoint. Prolific, held up fairly well to summer heat and sun in zone 5/6, and wasn't affected by powdery mildew (which affected my other cucumbers directly to the right of it). Great as a fresh cucumber, but we preferred to use it as a pickling cuke and make 5 day pickles. The one plant I had ended up lasting until the first week in September and I plan on having two plants for this summer.

Have been planting these in region 9 (!) for 4-5 yrs and with a little shade and plenty of water they do great. Very productive, very sweet, and yes, they are burpless. Ours will get mildew despite our heat so I treat early with Neem oil. Used to plant Marketmore but these are tastier!
Great cucumber for the south
I have been disappointed with most other cucumbers I have grown in the hot, humid mid-south.. As the weather heats up, most other varieties become bitter.
I have never had Suyo Long become bitter. They are tender and delicious even when large. If they get very big, they are also good for cooked dishes. They are a great all-around variety.
This year with rainfall and extreme heat mid-summer, I have had some downy mildew problems for the first time.
I bought this as a gift for my dad, and he's really impressed, and said it's the best cucumbers he's planted. It sounds like it's a really productive plant. They were planted in the US Midwest.

I fell in love with this cucumber last summer. It was very hot here in northern California, but Suyu stayed healthy, productive and disease-free. Its the best-tasting cucumber I have grown. Its a keeper!

First off, last year's cucumbers (another type) grew nearly 20 foot vines that grew up the railing of our upstairs neighbor. The property management company wrote a warning but allowed me to keep them growing as long as they had cucumbers to share with everyone...
This year, I thought, I will get a nice short vine and not be so much trouble. The package says five foot vines so I trellis them on a 10 foot ladder mesh bent into an arch. These vines now measure over NINE FEET TALL! Some even longer!
Not complaining... just be aware, here on the Emerald Coast panhandle of Florida (zone 8b) this thing shows no sign of stopping at ten feet!!
The long cucumbers are amazing! I harvested my first one at just over 12 inches and the second one right now is nearly 16 inches and a day from getting eaten. The thinner stem end is not quite as juicy as the fatter bottom 2/3rds but the flavor of the WHOLE thing is DELISH!
Unique fruit and PROLIFIC flowering! We LOVE it this showpiece!

A neighbor gave me one plant and I stuck it in the ground at the end of a row. It ended up 6 feet tall and three to 4 feet wide. I trellised it on a half a dozen stacked tomato cages. (Looked comical) It needed little to no care except water. I harvested over 20# of fruit today. Not counting the almost daily salad from it. It did develop some kind of wilt late in the season. (Almost over here in MN.) But all the other cukes my neighbors grew (community garden) had quit long before my single vine.
It’ll be in my garden every season from now on!
(Oh, almost forgot. I really didn’t like cukes till now)
Best cucumbers ever

Best cucumbers I’ve ever grown. This year (2022) has been especially rough for most cucumbers, including other varieties I have in the same bed, but these are as prolific as ever. I am still planting the seed packet I first started with 7 years ago. Zone 4b. I can’t imagine summer without these!
Delicious but sensitive in some climates
This is a delicious cucumber with a fresh flavor and wonderful crisp, perfect for home pickling. The fruits are quite prickly but the thorns come off easily by rubbing with a paper towel or cloth (we like to eat the skins in my house). Unfortunately, there is something about my local climate (Chicago, 5B) that these cukes really cannot manage. They wilt and die out about halfway through the season when other varieties remain strong. It’s not powdery mildew, but some other local pest that only this variety is sensitive to.
