This carrot’s beautiful red-purple exterior provides a striking contrast to its yellow-orange interior and light yellow core. A treat for the eye when sliced, its sweet, almost spicy, flavor makes this carrot a home gardener’s favorite and a best-seller at specialty and farmers’ markets. Considered the most refined purple carrot available, it was bred by Seed Savers Exchange member John Navazio.

Carrots are one of the most popular vegetables for fresh eating and have also become a staple of juicing. Grated carrots can be tossed into a salad or with zucchini and fried.

Try pairing your roasted carrots with ginger, mushrooms, and red wine vinegar or creating a carrot-curry soup to warm up on cold winter days.

Diced carrots are part of the "culinary trinity" of stock/broth, known as mirepoix, which also includes celery and onions. Mix 2 parts onions to 1 part each of carrot and celery to form the flavor base for many stocks, soups, stews, and sauces.

Growing Instructions

Instructions - Sow seeds outdoors 3-4 weeks before last spring frost, or as soon as soil can be worked. Keeping soil moist throughout the germination period is important to success. Misting the planted area daily or covering is recommended. Carrots are slow to germinate and need steady moisture until germination. Sow successively throughout the season for fresh carrots.

Great carrot and good size

by

It’s a fun carrot for kids to see the different color. I like the taste better than Nantes but I know that is preference. Very good germination rate even a couple of years after purchasing them.

Dragon is a Keeper

by

This is a beautiful carrot that if given enough room gets as large as my Danvers. Others have raved about its flavor as well as how it looks. It also stores very well in my root cellar. We were still eating them last June.

Sweet Carrots!

Grow easily - beautiful and delicious to eat.

More carrot flavor

by

High germination rate. Grows quickly so keep searching for ripe ones otherwise can crack. I mainly peel the purple off but not bad left on if scrubbed thoroughly. Full carrot flavor with a hint of winter squash. Everyone prefers dragon over nantes around here. Growing more next year! Yum.

The best carrot ever!

by

I planted this carrot spring 21 for the first time and I LOVE the taste. It is easy to grow. I gently scrub the outside to clean it then slice and bake along with other vegetables. I highly recommend.

Purple carrots for the win.

by

Our daughter (3 year old) absolutely loves these! We planted our small garden with a theme of her favorite color purple. These carrots were easy for her to grow. She was outside with me when I showed her how to trench a row, sow and cover the seeds. When it was her turn she couldn't contain her excitement to plant something in our garden! Then after they grew and we harvested them, every time she talked to someone she tells them that she grew purple carrots.

Thank you for a bonding and teaching moment with my daughter.

These grew beautifully in my suburban backyard garden! I'm near New Orleans. For unknown reason the fifth star won't light up. 5 stars!!

Nice carrots!

These sat for two years and just planted some this spring. Great germination and a lovely harvest! Not the biggest carrots, but fun for kids!
