Item Details

Producing crunchy, sweet, and fruity snap beans with an apple-grape flavor, this runner bean might unseat your favorite snap bean. In addition to tasting great fresh, the variety produces dry beans with a slightly sweet, earthy flavor and a smooth texture. A strong climber with beautiful flowers, the variety was developed by W. Deal & Sons Ltd., Kelvedon, Essex, England; introduced in 1950; and given to Seed Savers Exchange in 1981 by famed bean collector John Withee. Rarely available in the United States commercial seed trade, it is a marvel to be enjoyed.

  • 60 days to snap, 95 days to dry beans
  • Organic
  • From the Collection
  • Gorgeous flowers, delicious beans
  • Strong climber

This variety works for:

  • Fresh eating
  • Baking
  • Roasting
  • Soups
  • Ornamental

As your runner beans are maturing, you can either prepare the young pods or shell them and toss the fresh seeds into salads with mint, feta, and hulled corn. You can also add the flowers to salads or use them as a garnish.

This variety can be substituted for limas in cooler climates.

If you grow your runner beans as dry beans, try adding them to spicy Moroccan stews or Asian curries as the flavor of the bean will hold up well. They even work in chili recipes.

Growing Instructions

Instructions - Sow seeds outdoors after danger of frost has passed and soil and air temperatures have warmed. Runner beans prefer full sun, although they tolerate part shade very well. Young pods can be eaten whole, or the beans can be eaten fresh or dried. Even the flowers are edible.

Absolutely the most beautiful bean I have ever seen! I am growing them for the first time ever, and sure to be my yearly favorite from now on! I can't wait to taste them in a few months!
