German Pink Tomato
Item Details
One of the two original Bavarian heirlooms from Diane Ott Whealy’s family that started Seed Savers Exchange. Potato leaf plants produce large 1-2 pound beefsteak fruits. Meaty flesh with few seeds, very little cracking or blossom scars. Full sweet flavor. Excellent for canning, freezing, and slicing.
- Organic
This variety works for:
- Fresh eating
- Sauce
- Roasting
- Canning
- Freezing
Store your tomatoes at room temperature. The flavor and texture of tomatoes suffer when the fruit is chilled.
Heirloom tomatoes are bred for their flavor and simple preparation best allows that intense flavor to shine through. Tomatoes can be sliced and drizzled with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt and pepper or layer slices with basil and mozzarella for a Caprese salad.
Roasted tomatoes have a richer, concentrated flavor.
There are hundreds of salsa recipes to try and most are dramatically improved with the use of heirloom tomatoes. Tomatoes are also the main ingredient in Gazpacho, a cold soup that is perfect for summer.
Growing Instructions
Instructions - Sow seeds indoors ¼" deep. Tomatoes are sensitive to freezing temperatures, so wait to transplant outdoors until the soil is warm. Plant in full sun.
- Start Indoors: 6 weeks before last frost
- Germination: 7-14 Days
- Plant Outdoors: 24-36” Apart
- Support: Cage, stake, or trellis

By far, one of the most tasty, silky, dense tomato's I've grown here in Oregon. I will definitely grow many more next year! Very impressed!
Super tomato

Pink German is the best tasting tomato I ever grown! SSE own favorite variety, I got it this year, I grow all my tomatoes from seeds and have my own varieties. But this is so far best tasting superior tomato! Perfect germination and very strong plants, very happy and highly recommend this tomato to everyone.

Excellent Germination

This is the best germination tomato that a I have ever had. 100% germination and I can hardly wait to see how they grow in the rain forest of Washington State.

Love this tomato. Lots of big tomatoes on vine. Will grow again.
fantastic variety
by rebecca
living in Alaska, this was a short growing season due to a late spring. had to take all the tomatoes because of the night temperatures and now I am in the process of getting them ready for indoor ripening. I've never had any luck growing tomatoes in the greenhouse but this is a variety I will plant again next year. Only two with any signs of rot out of about 50 or more.
Died as it was flowering
by Mary
These were a total dud. Two plants each in my two separate tomato patches in different spots of the yard. Been in the ground for two months (after being started from seed inside) and seem to be dying just as they are flowering like a determinate vine.... My Romas and cherry tomatoes in the same patches are doing just fine. ...So disappointed. My elderly Mom was really looking forward to these and it doesn't look like there's going to be any.
Biggest freshest tomatoes ever they don’t split !
by Brigitte
These tomatoes were the best I have ever grown , that’s all I am going to grow from now on . They ripen late summer I had to leave for two weeks I harvested the tomatoes before I left , they were all green I had roughly 20 lbs , they ripen at different time making this very convenient , they were perfect even being harvested green . They stay fresh longer , they don’t split the best !
Old reliable
by Lancelot of Lake Monona
Reliable, abundant and very tasty for blt's. I grow five vines and they are one of them. No more or less susceptible to blight than any other heirloom variety. I spray with baking soda and a few drops of oil and dish soap to slow blight. I reserve my five star review solely for "Cherokee Purple," This variety comes in just behind.
