Item Details

‘Drotts Yellow’ boasts a tasty, sweet, fruity flavor that sets it apart from other ground cherries. Its husks turn first yellow and then brown at peak maturity, when the half-inch fruits drop to the ground from large, sprawling, and highly productive plants. Exchange lister Thomas Jerde acquired this variety in 1986 when he bought a home in Minneapolis from the Albert Drotts family and discovered the ground cherry growing in the garden.

This variety works for:

  • Fresh eating

These fruits have a flavor something like a tomato crossed with a pineapple and strawberry - distinct but not unpleasant! It makes a great addition to salads and is often used to make jam or pies.

For a sweet treat, carefully unwrap the husks from the ground cherries, making sure to keep them attached to the fruit. Then dip the fruit in melted chocolate, using the husk as a handle, and arrange on a cold plate. You can chill them for a few hours until the chocolate hardens and then serve to guests as an appetizer or party snack.

All parts of the Ground Cherry plant are toxic except the ripe fruit. Fruit is ripe once it falls from the plant.

Productive and sweet

by

I've grown this variety in Connecticut for a few years running and I love it. Robust plants with sweet fruits. Check daily once they start ripening -- very productive! Six plants in one raised bed gave me plenty for snacking and making jam.

Grew in pots in W. Nebraska, worked great!

Planted these in Western Nebraska in pots, and by mid august these 3 plants were prolifically producing, very satisfied.

Prolific and easy care!

by

Easily germinated, vigorous and healthy plants. Started producing by mid July here (zone 6a). My favorite out of the three varieties I have tried, as it seems to have NO 'tomato' or vegetal aftertaste. Delicious and SWEET!
