Item Details

Produces bumper crops for fresh eating and pickling, with fruits seemingly growing overnight in peak season. A bush cucumber, this variety will take up only 2 or 3 square feet per plant. Introduced to American gardeners by Seed Savers Exchange in 1992, the variety originated in Russia, where its short vines (up to 5' long) and ease of growing made it perfect for dacha or second-home gardens near Moscow.

  • 45-50 days
  • ±900 seeds/oz
  • Organic
  • Short vines grow to 5 feet
  • Good production

This variety works for:

  • Fresh eating
  • Pickling

Cucumbers are most often used raw and are perfect in salads. Some chefs prefer to peel the skin off the fruit as it can be bitter.

Cucumbers pair well with mint an dill, which can be added directly to your salad or to dressings. Cucumber and mint can also be added to smoothies and juice. Tatziki sauce is made from shredded cucumber, yogurt, and dill.

Pickling cucumbers, however, are best for preserving in a solution of vinegar, salt, sugar, spices, and water. You can create countless number of combinations for your pickles to use on sandwiches, as a relish, or eaten as side dish.

Growing Instructions

Instructions - Sow seeds outdoors in 12" diameter hills after the last frost when soil is warm. Space hills 6' apart in all directions. Can also be started indoors 2-4 weeks before the last frost for an earlier harvest. Cucumbers benefit from consistent moisture. Provide support for vines to save space.

  • Direct Seed: 1" Deep
  • Seeds to Hill: 6-8 Seeds
  • Thin: To 3-4 Plants
  • Light: Full Sun

Reliable and flavorful

by

Great production and flavor. We ate fresh and made pickles and relish.

Larger than expected

by

Impressive. Vine is larger than I expected. However, it is very healthy and first cucumber plant to produce this year. I am very happy with it
Maryland, growing in raised bed, intensive (square foot gardening)
I plan to grow it next year and plan for more space.

A must cucumber for every garden!

by

Amazing! I love this variety because it doesn’t take over my garden. The cucumbers are outstanding. Highly recommend.

Long Vines

by

Ended up with very long vines - up to 6-7' and expected them to be smaller!

Resilient, early, and productive

by

Zone 4b/5a. Loved this cucumber! Good flavor, grew solidly in brand new garden with poor soils, and produced well despite heavy cucumber beetle pressure (which killed all the hybrid cukes I planted).

Fast with Great Yields; Susceptible to Powdery Mildew

by

Quick to produce fruits and high yields. Some vine in the length as advertised but some do grow longer. It's phenotype specific. The only downside is that they are highly susceptible to powdery mildew during all stages of growth.

Fruits taste great sliced or skinned and in Greek salad but they really shine when pickled. I like to ferment them in a salt brine with black peppercorns, crushed garlic cloves, and bay leaves.
