Item Details

Also called Black Crimea and introduced to Seed Savers Exchange by Lars Olov Rosenstrom of Sweden. Originally from the Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea. Beefsteak fruits are a unique combination of violet-brown and purple-red—they turn almost black with sufficient sunlight and heat. Excellent full flavor.

  • 70-90 days from transplant
  • Conventional
  • Beefsteak tomatoes
  • Indeterminate - Fruit ripens throughout the season
  • Fruits are violet-brown and purple-red
  • Sun exposure darkens the color
  • Excellent flavor

This variety works for:

  • Fresh eating
  • Sauce
  • Paste
  • Roasting
  • Canning
  • Drying
  • Freezing

Store your tomatoes at room temperature. The flavor and texture of tomatoes suffer when the fruit is chilled.

Heirloom tomatoes are bred for their flavor and simple preparation best allows that intense flavor to shine through. Tomatoes can be sliced and drizzled with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt and pepper or layer slices with basil and mozzarella for a Caprese salad.

Roasted tomatoes have a richer, concentrated flavor.

There are hundreds of salsa recipes to try and most are dramatically improved with the use of heirloom tomatoes. Tomatoes are also the main ingredient in Gazpacho, a cold soup that is perfect for summer.

Great flavor

by

I really enjoy the flavor of this tomato. It is so good sliced on hamburgers. I did have some trouble with the fruit splitting, but I would blame that on my inexperience and a problem with our water line. The flavor is worth it, so I am trying it again this year.

Lovely flavor, may crack

by

Delicious flavor and beautiful looking, but they seem prone to cracking. Bit challenging to maintain the right moisture balance between dry spells and heavy rain in SE PA to prevent the cracks. Juicy and nice to cook with.

Sweet and Juicy! The best!

by

THE best tomatoes! Everyone loves these and raves about these. Very sweet and juicy and easy to grow.

A favorite for sure

by

Always loved this tomato. I grew it years ago and to this day people still ask me about it.

Going to try something else next season - PA zone 5

by

I found these to be inconsistent. The seedlings were a bit more finicky to start than the other varieties I grow. I found the fruit to be inconsistent. The bottom half of the tomato would be ready to harvest and the top portion was green and hard forcing me to either allow it to get ripe to the point of no flavor on the base of the fruit allowing the top to mature...or to cut and waste 1/3 of the fruit of so. Thinking it may just be related to my location, my Amish paste and others did well as always.

Too soft, no texture

by

Tried this variety for two years. In Southern California becomes very soft as soon as it ripens. No texture to talk about. Basically, when it developed color on the plant, it’s almost a jelly inside. Also cracks when overwatered.

Black Krim tomato

by

just tasted our first Black Krim tomato, sweet as candy, luscious and very juicy, with a deep rich flavour, and I don't even think it was fully ripe yet! The plant, grown from a 2-inch sucker a gardener friend gave me, is gorgeous, prettiest tomato plant I've ever grown. It is loaded with fruit, and the foliage remains very clean, no sign of any kind of virus or what have you, which is very prevalent in our neck of the woods where tomatoes can be difficult at best. It lacks any hint of acid, which may be especially good for those who can't tolerate too much acid in their diet. A splash of good balsamic is the answer for those who prefer some tartness. Our friends and neighbors will be thrilled as there will be a bumper crop to harvest in the next few days.

Trouble Germinating

by

I had trouble getting these to germinate or start. The other seeds all did good.
